Grooming Gear That Every 40+ Man Needs in His Kit

Aug 05, 2025

Good grooming is a cornerstone of confidence. Every man’s kit should cover hair, facial hair, skin and nails. Here are the essentials.

Electric shaver or safety razor:

Even if you prefer a clean shave or have grown a beard, a quality razor is a must.  An electric shaver offers quick touch-ups with less irritation , while a safety or cartridge razor can give a closer finish on demand .  Rotate between them depending on your needs.  If you keep facial hair, use a razor to clean the neck and trim edges.

Beard trimmer:

If you have any stubble or beard, a dedicated trimmer is crucial. Look for one with multiple length guards so you can keep your desired style at the right length .  Trimmers are also handy for moustaches or sideburns. Having good attachments lets you shape your whiskers precisely.

Hair clipper/comb:

Even if you go to the barber, having clippers (or at least a good comb) at home is useful. Clippers help you buzz down hair between cuts or trim body hair.  A sturdy comb (or brush) is vital for styling thicker hair or spiking short hair . Double-sided combs (fine and wide teeth) can handle different hair textures.

Nail kit:

Never underestimate neat nails. You need at least a pair of nail clippers (one for fingernails, one for toenails) and a file .  Trim nails straight across and gently file corners. Short, clean nails make a big difference. Keep cuticles pushed back and invest in moisturizer for your hands if they’re rough.

Tweezers:

A pair of precise tweezers is great for stray brow hairs, nose hairs or splinters .  Eyebrow grooming is a small touch that keeps your face looking tidy.  Do nose hairs gently (best done in the shower or with an electric nose trimmer if you have one).

Electric toothbrush:

Oral hygiene is grooming too. Experts recommend a powered toothbrush with a timer for the full 2-minute brush cycle . This ensures you brush long enough and often replace heads. Fresh breath and clean teeth are noticed immediately in social situations.

Quality razor blade:

If you use a manual razor, stock high quality blades and shaving cream.  Consider a badger hair shave brush and soap for the closest shave with minimal irritation .  Always moisturise or use aftershave balm afterwards.

Moisturiser and sunscreen:

Skin starts to age more visibly after 40, so add a facial moisturizer (with SPF daily) to your routine.  This isn’t “gear” per se, but it’s crucial for smooth, healthy skin.

Deodorant/cologne:

A good deodorant or antiperspirant is basic. A subtle cologne or aftershave can complement it, but remember, less is more.  Spray a little on pulse points, not a cloud over your body .

Hair styling product (if used): Wax, pomade or matte paste can help manage any hair you have. Use sparingly; the right product can add texture or tame stray hairs, making any hairstyle look intentional.

Callus remover (optional):

If you spend much time on your feet, a foot file or pumice stone helps prevent painful calluses. It’s a small detail but keeps you comfortable.

With these basics, you cover all the angles. A GQ “sink ledge” checklist includes many of these: electric shaver, trimmer, comb, tweezers, clippers, blow dryer, toothbrush, etc . You don’t need every specialty tool, but having the core kit means you can look neat head-to-toe.

Remember:

Tools only help if you use them. Schedule a quick grooming session into your routine, trim nails every week, shave or trim facial hair a couple times a week, brush and moisturize daily. It takes just minutes, but the payoff in confidence is big.
