Small Things Do Not Add Up. They Multiply.
A year ago I wrote a blog on this idea. I thought I understood it.
I did not. Not fully. Not at the depth that the last twelve months of applying it, watching it operate in real time across clients, and experiencing its effects in my own practice have produced.
The line came from Dr Jordan Shallow during the PreScript course. A sentence that landed with the specific weight of something that is immediately recognisable as true but that you have not previously had the language to articulate. Small things do not add up. They multiply.
When I first wrote about it, I was thinking about the concept at the layer level. Add layer one. Then add layer two. Then layer three. The accumulation of layers multiplies the overall power of the programme. That is true and it is the architecture of the zero to zeus system that this site is built on.
But the multiplication does not only happen between layers. It happens within them. And understanding that distinction has changed how I design, deliver, and observe the results of every programme I run.
The Shift: From Addition Between Layers to Multiplication Within Them
Here is the distinction in concrete terms.
The layered approach to building health and performance, as covered in the zero to zeus blog on this site, moves from simple to complex in a deliberate sequence. Increase movement. Adjust nutrition. Add structured training. Refine dietary specificity. Introduce cardio. Increase precision. Supplement to biology. Each layer is added when the previous one is stable. The layers interact and the combined effect exceeds what any single layer would produce alone. That is the between layer multiplication.
What I had been underestimating was the multiplication that happens when you go deeper inside a single layer and attend to everything that constitutes it.
Take sleep. On the surface, sleep is a layer. You are sleeping or you are not. You are sleeping for enough hours or you are not. That is the addition model. Sleep improves. Tick. Add it to the total.
But sleep is not a single variable. It is a system within the layer. The absence of screens in the 90 minutes before bed, the shower that raises surface temperature and triggers the compensatory core temperature drop that initiates deep sleep, the reading or meditation or deliberate stillness that downregulates the nervous system from the sympathetic activation of the day, the room temperature optimised to support the core temperature decline the body requires, the airflow, the acoustic environment, the consistency of the wake time that anchors the circadian rhythm, the absence of alcohol in the hours before sleeping.
Every one of those variables is a small thing. None of them looks like a transformation on its own. Removing screens from the evening is not a dramatic health intervention. Adjusting bedroom temperature is not a major protocol change.
But these small things within the sleep layer do not add. They multiply. The man who addresses every component of the sleep system does not sleep marginally better than the man who addresses one component. He sleeps in a categorically different biological environment. The hormonal production, the neural recovery, the inflammatory regulation, the cortisol reset that sleep supports: all of these improve not by the sum of the individual adjustments but by the compound amplification of each one acting on the others simultaneously.
This is what Dr Shallow's line actually means at its deepest level. And it took me a year of watching it operate in real time to understand it properly.
What This Means for How I Build Programmes
When I thought addition was the mechanism, I built programmes by identifying the next layer and adding it. The sequencing was the intelligence.
Now I understand that the intelligence lives as much inside each layer as it does in the sequence of them. The question is not only when to add the next layer but how thoroughly the current layer has been developed. How many of the small things within it have been attended to. How completely the multiplication within the layer has been allowed to run before the next layer is introduced.
This changes the pacing. It changes the depth of the questions asked at each stage. It changes what I am looking for when a client's progress accelerates or slows.
When progress slows, the instinct in most coaching models is to add. More training. More dietary restriction. A new supplement. A new protocol. The assumption is that something is missing and the response is to reach for the next layer.
But the multiplication model asks a different question first. Has the current layer been fully developed? Are the small things within it operating at the level that allows their compounding to run? Is the sleep layer fully constituted or is the client sleeping for the right number of hours in a room that is too warm, without having downregulated their nervous system properly, on a schedule that is inconsistent across the week?
If the answer is that the layer has not been fully developed internally, adding the next one does not accelerate progress. It adds weight to an insufficiently developed foundation. The new layer cannot multiply into a layer that has not yet reached its own multiplication potential.
This is why the depth of attention to small things within each layer is not perfectionism. It is the mechanism of the compounding that produces the results that people cannot initially explain. They did not dramatically change their sleep. They changed every small thing that constitutes sleep, and the multiplication of those small things produced an outcome that felt disproportionate to the apparent simplicity of the individual changes.
The Client Biobank: What the Data Across Programmes Is Revealing
This is the dimension of the multiplication model that has become most interesting to me in the last twelve months. The one that emerged not from theory but from accumulation.
Working with enough clients across enough programmes, attending to enough detail within enough layers, produces something that a single client's experience cannot: patterns. The points at which progress accelerates. The points at which it slows. The specific combinations of intra layer components that appear to produce the greatest multiplication in specific populations. The clues that indicate a layer has been fully developed and is ready to compound with the next one versus the clues that indicate it is still developing internally.
Success leaves clues. What we measure we manage.
Both of these are true in isolation. The multiplication model adds a third dimension: what we observe across enough clients becomes a dataset that informs every individual programme with a precision that single client experience cannot produce.
I have begun to think of this as a kind of client biobank. Not in the clinical sense of stored biological material but in the data sense of the Bryan Johnson blog: the accumulation of measured observations across a population that reveals patterns invisible at the individual level. At what point in the layering sequence does cardiovascular fitness begin to produce the most pronounced effect on sleep quality? Which specific sleep components, when addressed simultaneously, appear to produce the most dramatic acceleration in hormonal recovery? Where does the gut health layer, when fully constituted with dietary diversity, fermented foods, fibre adequacy, and stress management working together, produce its most significant downstream effects on body composition and energy?
These questions cannot be answered from a single client's experience. They emerge from the aggregate of enough clients, developed enough within their layers, observed carefully enough to distinguish between the multiplication that is happening and the addition that is merely accumulating.
The data builds. The patterns emerge. And each new client benefits not only from the principles of the programme but from the accumulated intelligence of every programme that preceded theirs. The biobank is not biological. It is experiential. And it is one of the most significant advantages of working with a coach who has enough data, across enough clients, across enough time, to see what the individual cannot.
The Workflow Dimension: Multiplication Beyond Training
The multiplication model has not stayed within the client programmes. It has migrated into how I work.
The way I structure the client journey from initial contact to full programme delivery. The sequence of information gathered, the depth of questions asked at each stage, the order in which I introduce concepts and demands on the client's attention: these are all governed by the same principle. Simple to complex. Each element fully developed before the next is introduced. Each small thing within each stage attended to, because the multiplication within the stage is what creates the conditions for the next stage to produce its maximum effect.
Adding value from simple to complex and watching it multiply the power of the outcome for the client is not a coaching philosophy. It is an observable phenomenon that the last twelve months have made impossible to ignore. The clients who receive the most thoroughly developed early stages, whose foundation layers are attended to with the greatest granularity, produce results in the later stages that consistently outpace what the later stage interventions alone would predict.
This is the practical expression of small things multiplying. Not in the abstract. In the specific, measurable, client by client reality of programmes designed with this understanding at their core.
3 Action Points: Apply the Multiplication Model to Your Own Practice
Action Point 1: Choose One Current Layer and Audit Its Internal Components
Pick the single layer of your current health programme that you consider most established. The training, the sleep, the nutrition, the recovery. Now list every component that actually constitutes that layer rather than the headline variable. If you chose sleep, the headline variable is hours slept. The actual components are: screen free window duration, pre sleep nervous system downregulation practice, room temperature, bedroom acoustic environment, consistency of wake time across all seven days, alcohol in the evening window, meal timing relative to sleep, and the quality of the winding down sequence that precedes the attempt to sleep. Count how many of those components are genuinely optimised versus how many are at a baseline that you have not examined recently. The gap between the headline variable and the fully constituted layer is where the multiplication is waiting. Close the gap before adding the next layer.
Action Point 2: Track One Intra Layer Variable You Have Never Measured
Within your most important current layer, identify one specific small thing you have never tracked and begin measuring it for 30 days. The bedroom temperature at sleep onset. The exact duration of your screen free window before bed. The consistency of your wake time across weekends versus weekdays. The number of different plant foods consumed in a week within the nutrition layer. The ratio of pulling to pressing movements within the training layer. Whatever the variable, measuring it for 30 days creates two things: the data that tells you where that variable actually sits rather than where you assume it sits, and the attention that tends to improve a variable simply through the act of observing it. What you measure you manage. What you manage begins to multiply with the things around it that were already in place.
Action Point 3: Identify Where Your Progress Slowed and Ask the Intra Layer Question First
If there is a point in your recent health investment where progress plateaued or slowed, resist the instinct to add the next thing before asking whether the current layer is fully developed internally. Sit with the question honestly. Is the training layer producing its maximum effect, or are there movement quality issues, recovery gaps, or programming variables within that layer that have not been addressed? Is the nutrition layer fully constituted, or are there absorption issues, timing variables, or dietary diversity gaps within it that are limiting its multiplication? Is the sleep layer actually optimised in all of its components, or is it performing at the headline level while several of its internal variables remain unaddressed? The answer to where the multiplication has stalled is almost always inside the current layer rather than absent from the next one. Look inside before adding above.
A year ago I understood this idea at the level of a principle. Now I understand it at the level of a mechanism. The difference between those two things is the difference between knowing that small things multiply and being able to watch the multiplication happen, measure its pace, identify where it accelerates and where it stalls, and use that observation to build programmes that are smarter than any single layer of them suggests they should be.
Dr Shallow's line was the seed. Twelve months of watching it operate in real time, across real clients, in real programmes, has made it the foundation of how I think about everything on this site.
Small things do not add up. They multiply. And when you understand that at the level of mechanism rather than principle, you start attending to the small things differently. Not because they are small. Because of what they become when everything around them is also attended to.
