What Vince Gironda Would Think of Modern Gym Culture
Gentlemen, if I were still breathing and walked into one of these modern "fitness centres" today, I would probably burn the place down and piss on the ashes.
I built Vince's Gym to forge champions, not to babysit weekend warriors chasing likes and selfies. I trained men who became Mr. Olympia and Hollywood legends by drilling fundamentals into their skulls until they bled iron. Today? It's a circus of clowns in tank tops, filming themselves doing half reps on machines while sipping coloured sugar water.
You want my unfiltered take? Here it is. No sugar coating. No marketing spin. Just the raw truth from the Iron Guru who never compromised.
Exercise Selection
You call that training? Half the exercises I see on those glowing screens wouldn't even warm up a real lifter. People are doing endless cable flyes and bicep curls on fancy machines while their backs look like question marks and their legs are matchsticks. I banned back squats for most trainees because they turned the movement into a glute and lower back exercise instead of hammering the quads. Today? Everyone's squatting with their ass to the floor like they're trying to shit out a watermelon, then wondering why their knees are destroyed.
Real exercise selection means choosing movements that hit the muscle from every angle with perfect control. Neck presses for upper chest. Sternum dips for lower chest. Drag curls for biceps peak. Wide grip upright rows for side delts. These build the complete, aesthetic physique, not the bloated, disconnected look you see everywhere now. Modern gyms are full of people doing whatever feels good instead of what works. That's why most of you look soft and unfinished.
Social Aspect
The gym was never a social club. It was a temple of iron where you went to suffer and grow. Now it's a goddamn coffee shop with dumbbells. People stand around chatting, filming TikToks, and posing in mirrors instead of lifting. I ran a serious gym. You came in, you trained hard, you left. No bullshit conversations about your feelings or weekend plans.
This social nonsense kills intensity. You cannot build a champion's physique while gossiping between sets. Real training demands focus. Every rep. Every set. No distractions. The modern gym culture has turned training into entertainment, and the results speak for themselves. Most of you look like you lift for Instagram, not for yourself.
Forgetting Fundamentals & Principle
You have forgotten the principles that built the golden era physiques. Progressive overload. Perfect form. Training density. Short, brutal workouts. Instead, you chase novelty. New exercises every week. Fancy machines. Endless volume with no intensity. I used to say the honest workout was 8 sets of 8. Simple. Brutal. Effective. Today you have programmes with 27 different exercises and wonder why you are not growing.
Fundamentals never change. Lift heavy. Eat for your goal. Recover like your life depends on it. Master the basics before you chase advanced tricks. Most modern trainees never master anything. They jump from one shiny object to the next, wondering why they stay average. Principles built champions. Trends build excuses.
The Nutritional Aspect
Nutrition today is a complete disaster. You have influencers telling you to avoid red meat, eggs, and butter while pushing plant powders and seed oils. I had my 36 egg diet for a reason. Cholesterol builds hormones. Real food builds muscle. Today you count macros like accountants and still look soft because you eat processed garbage.
Eat for your goal. High protein. Adequate fats. Carbs around training if you need them. Simple. Effective. Stop with the ridiculous elimination diets unless you have a medical reason. I never banned carbs completely. I cycled them. The body needs fuel. The modern obsession with being "clean" has produced a generation of weak, hormonally imbalanced men who look like they lift but have no actual muscle.
Over Reliance of Supplements
Supplements are exactly that. Supplements. Not the foundation. Today you have men spending hundreds a month on powders and pills while their actual meals are garbage. I used desiccated liver, aminos, and kelp because they filled real gaps. Not because they replaced food.
The supplement industry has convinced you that you need 17 different products to grow. You don't. You need food, training, and recovery. Everything else is secondary. Over reliance on supplements is just another form of avoidance. You think buying the latest "test booster" will fix your laziness. It won't.
PED's & Peptides
I never touched steroids and I built one of the greatest physiques of my era through food and training. Today everyone wants the easy way. Anabolics. Peptides. The "Wolverine Stack." These things have their place under medical supervision for specific medical needs, but using them as a shortcut because you cannot be bothered to train and eat properly is pathetic.
Real champions were built on hard work. The chemicals came later for many. If you need drugs to look decent, you have not built a foundation. Focus on the basics first. The drugs will still be there if you truly need them later.
Social Media Fitness
Social media has destroyed more physiques than it has built. Everyone is an expert. Everyone has a "secret." The truth is buried under filters, angles, and sponsorship deals. You see 30 second clips and think you understand training. You don't.
Real training happens in the gym, not on your phone. Stop consuming and start doing. The endless scroll is stealing your focus and your results. Delete the fitness accounts that do not teach principles. Follow those who show real work, not just the highlight reel.
3 Action Points
- Audit your current training. Cut it down to the 6 most important compound movements and focus on them with perfect form and progressive overload for the next 8 weeks. No new exercises.
- Replace one supplement or "health" product with a whole food equivalent this week. Track the difference in how you feel and perform.
- Delete or mute 80 percent of the fitness accounts you follow. Keep only those that teach fundamentals and show real work, not entertainment.
Gentlemen, modern gym culture is soft. It is distracted. It is built for engagement, not results. Train like a man who wants to be remembered, not liked. The iron never lies. Neither should you.
